Table of Contents
Getting to Iceland
Getting to Iceland is very convenient, with direct flights available from major cities in Europe and North America. For example, London and Venice are less than 5 hours away and New York City is only 4 hours!
The main international airport in Iceland is Keflavik International Airport, located just 45 minutes away from the capital city of Reykjavik. From here, you can easily rent a car or take a shuttle bus to get to your accommodation.
How to Get Around Iceland
The best way to get around Iceland is by car! Renting a car allows you the freedom to explore at your own pace and take in all of Iceland’s stunning scenery. Iceland has a road, the Ring Road, that runs around the entire island and connects most major cities and attractions.
If you’re not comfortable driving, there are also organized tours available that can take you to popular destinations, with Reykjavik as your home base.
Iceland 7-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Reykjavik
Start your tour of Iceland in the capital city of Reykjavik. Begin your day with a visit to the iconic Hallgrimskirkja Church. This church is so unique in shape and size, and has a beautiful organ inside. We enjoyed going in and enjoying the peacefulness of the place.
Next, you can explore Iceland’s fascinating history and culture at the National Museum of Iceland, where exhibits showcase the country’s Viking heritage, medieval sagas, and modern-day achievements. Also, don’t miss a visit to the Harpa Concert Hall, a stunning architectural marvel with breathtaking views of the harbor.
While on the harbor, you can also stop to see the Sun Voyager, which is a symbol for exploration.
In the evening, take a Northern Lights Tour! We booked our tour on Viator and it’s an absolute must for any Iceland trip. Seeing the Aurora Borealis is truly an unforgettable experience.
Day 2: Blue Lagoon
On Day 2, indulge in a day of relaxation at the world famous Blue Lagoon Geothermal Spa, located just outside of Reykjavik! Spend your morning soaking in the warm, mineral-rich waters of the lagoon, surrounded by incredible volcanic landscapes.
In addition to bathing in the lagoon, take advantage of the spa’s amenities, including silica mud masks, sauna rooms, and in-water massages. With our package, it included a silica mud mask and a drink in the Lagoon. We highly recommend trying the mud mask because it leaves your skin feeling incredibly soft and refreshed.
After a day of relaxation, enjoy a delicious meal at the Blue Lagoon’s onsite restaurant, featuring a menu of Icelandic-inspired dishes made with locally sourced ingredients. Full disclosure, it’s super expensive though!
Day 3: Golden Circle
For Day 3, head on a classic Icelandic adventure with a full-day Golden Circle tour, exploring some of the country’s most iconic natural wonders. Start your journey at Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its stunning landscapes and historical significance.
Next, visit the Geysir Geothermal Area, home to the famous Strokkur geyser, which erupts every few minutes, shooting hot water high into the air. The geysers were really interesting and each of them were labeled with a temperature. Some people have jumped in and gotten some extreme burns, so please don’t do that!
Continue your tour with a visit to Gullfoss Waterfall, one of Iceland’s most breathtaking waterfalls, where you can admire the cascading waters plunging into a deep gorge below. End your day with a stop at the charming town of Skalholt, where you can have a traditional and authentic Iceland meal.
Day 4: Snaefellsnes Peninsula
On Day 4, explore the stunning beauty of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, often referred to as “Iceland in miniature” due to its diverse landscapes and natural wonders. Begin your day with a visit to the charming fishing village of Arnarstapi, where you can stroll along the coastal cliffs and admire the rugged beauty of the coastline.
Next, venture into Snaefellsjokull National Park, home to the iconic Kirkjufell mountain and the mystical Snaefellsjokull glacier. Hike through lava fields, explore hidden waterfalls, and marvel at the dramatic scenery of this remote wilderness area.
End your day with a visit to Djupalonssandur Beach, known for its black sand and unique rock formations. Take a leisurely walk along the shore and soak in the beautiful views!
Day 5: South Coast of Iceland Tour
On Day 5, discover the dramatic landscapes of Iceland’s South Coast on a full-day tour of this breathtaking region. Start your day with a visit to Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, where you can walk behind the falls in the summer!
Next, journey to Skogafoss Waterfall, one of Iceland’s largest and most impressive waterfalls, where you can climb to the top for panoramic views of the surrounding area. Continue your tour with a visit to Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach, famous for its towering basalt columns and dramatic sea stacks. We couldn’t wait for this part of our trip as we’ve always wanted to see and feel black sand. It was so unique and didn’t disappoint!
End your day with a visit to the village of Vik, where you can enjoy a traditional Icelandic meal at a local restaurant and explore the quaint streets of Vik, which are lined with colorful houses.
Day 6: Westfjords
On Day 6, journey to the remote and rugged Westfjords region of Iceland, where towering mountains, deep fjords, and pristine wilderness await. Start your day with a scenic drive through the beautiful landscapes of this remote wilderness area.
Check out the villages of Isafjorour and Patreksfjordur, where you can see Iceland’s fishing towns and sample fresh seafood at a local restaurant. Take a hike in the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve, home to an array of wildlife and some of the most pristine wilderness areas in Iceland.
Finally, end your day with a visit to one of the region’s natural hot springs, where you can soak in the warm waters and unwind.
Day 7: Return to Reykjavik
On Day 7, to Reykjavik from the Westfjords and spend your final day exploring any missed attractions in the capital city.
In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner at one of Reykjavik’s top restaurants, savoring the flavors of Icelandic cuisine one last time before your departure. If you haven’t by this time, make sure to try fermented shark. This is big in Iceland!
