What is an International Driving Permit (IDP)?

An International Driving Permit is a legal document that translates your domestic driver’s license into several languages and allows you to drive a private motor vehicle in foreign countries without further tests or applications.

Essentially, an IDP serves as proof that you possess a valid driver’s license in your home country, making it easier for foreign authorities to understand your driving credentials and verify your eligibility to operate a vehicle.

Why Do You Need an International Driving Permit?

Obtaining an International Driving Permit may seem like an inconvenient additional step in your travel preparations, but it is very important for international travelers planning to drive abroad!

Here are some compelling reasons why you need an International Driving Permit:

Mandatory in Many Countries

Several countries around the world require foreign drivers to carry an International Driving Permit along with their valid driver’s license to legally operate a motor vehicle within their jurisdiction. Failure to comply with this requirement may result in hefty fines, vehicle impoundment, or even legal repercussions.

Convenience and Accessibility

Having an IDP allows you to rent or lease vehicles more easily in foreign countries, as many rental agencies require or prefer customers to present an International Driving Permit along with their driver’s license when renting a car or motorbike.

In addition, an IDP includes translations of your driver’s license information in multiple languages, making it easier for foreign authorities to understand your driving credentials and verify your eligibility to drive without facing language barriers or misunderstandings.

Unforeseen Circumstances

Carrying an International Driving Permit provides an added layer of preparedness for unforeseen circumstances, such as accidents, emergencies, or legal issues, allowing you to navigate potential challenges more effectively and seek assistance when needed.

What Countries Require an International Driving Permit for U.S. Drivers?

The following countries require IDPs for U.S. drivers:

Australia, Austria, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece Italy, Japan, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, and Thailand.

(Note: This is not an exhaustive list! Be sure to check if your destination requires an IDP for drivers from your country. This can change with time and vary based on country of origin.)

In addition, specific car rental agencies may vary on their enforcement of IDP policies.

How to Obtain an International Driving Permit?

Official Document

I recommend getting your IDP through an entity entrusted by your country’s government.

For the United States, only the AAA is authorized to distribute International Driving Permits

You will need to fill out an application, bring 2 passport photos, a valid driver’s license, and $20 to an AAA Travel Office.

You can also apply via mail, by submitting your completed IDP application form, 2 passport pictures each signed on the back, $20, and a photocopy of both sides of your driver’s license.

International Drivers Association

This option is not available for U.S. drivers.

The International Drivers Association is not a government agency and does not provide an official IDP.

However, their IDPs provide translations into the same languages and may be useful for other reasons. They also claim that their IDPs are accepted by major car rental companies

This company may also have a quick delivery time compared to other entities.

FAQs about International Driving Permits

1. Can I Substitute my Driver's License for an International Driving Permit?

No, you must have your domestic driver’s license at all times. The IDP would be an additional document.

2. What are the Age Requirements for an International Driving Permit?
